XITE Gamharia Honors Indigenous Heritage on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
Gamharia, August 12, 2024 – XITE Gamharia hosted a vibrant and culturally rich celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, shining a spotlight on the unique traditions, values, and contributions of Jharkhand’s indigenous communities. The event was thoughtfully organized by the Department of English, with significant support from the Cultural Club, Sarjan (Literary Club), and the Branding & Communication Department of XITE Gamharia. The day was marked by a series of engaging and educational activities that brought together the entire XITE community in a shared appreciation of indigenous heritage.
The program commenced with a solemn Invocation of Ancestors, a traditional ritual that underscored the deep respect and connection to the roots of indigenous cultures. This was followed by an Introductory Speech delivered by Enock Topno, who eloquently emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous cultures, especially within Jharkhand, where the tribal population is a vital part of the state’s identity. Fr. Ritesh Edwin Dungdung, SJ, then welcomed the audience with a powerful message, expressing gratitude to all attendees and reaffirming the institution’s commitment to promoting and preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples.
A storytelling session, led by Sarjan – The Literary Club, captivated the audience by delving into the rich traditions and moral values of Jharkhand’s tribes. The session was a window into the lives and wisdom of indigenous communities, offering lessons that are still relevant today. This was followed by a carefully curated movie screening by TSF, providing deeper insights into the struggles and triumphs of indigenous peoples, further enhancing the audience’s understanding and appreciation of these resilient communities.
Musical performances by Manual brought the sounds of indigenous culture to life, resonating deeply with the audience and adding a soulful dimension to the celebration. The day’s highlight, however, was the Ramp Walk, where students creatively depicted various aspects of Jharkhand’s tribal culture. From showcasing traditional Santhali musical instruments to representing the agricultural practices and the sacred rituals of Jaher, the Ramp Walk was a vivid and dynamic celebration of indigenous life. Gopal, a 1st-year BA Economics student, was awarded the first prize for his outstanding representation of sacred worship in Jaher, while other participants were recognized for their vibrant and heartfelt presentations.
The event concluded with a Prize Distribution ceremony, a Vote of Thanks delivered by Prof. Akinchan Xaxa, and a move to the ground floor where traditional food stalls and a Chain Dance awaited the attendees. The food stalls featured a variety of indigenous cuisines, offering a taste of Jharkhand’s rich culinary traditions. The Chain Dance, a traditional celebration, brought everyone together in a joyful expression of unity and cultural pride.
Special guests Suraj Gilua, Manager and Nitish Kumar, Consultant from Tata Steel Foundation, graced the event with their presence, underscoring the importance of such celebrations in fostering understanding and respect for indigenous cultures. The event saw full participation from students, faculty and non-teaching staff, making it a true community effort and a resounding success.
This celebration at XITE Gamharia not only honored the traditions and contributions of indigenous peoples but also served as a reminder of the ongoing importance of preserving and promoting cultural diversity in today’s world.
