Manipal, August 3, 2024 – Prasanna School of Public Health (PSPH), a constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), held its Orientation Day 2024 at the TMA Pai Hall, KMC Administration Block, to warmly welcome the fresh batch of students embarking on their journey in public health education. The event saw an inspiring lineup of speakers and a structured programme aimed at setting a positive tone for the new academic year.
The Orientation Day began with a warm Welcome Address by Dr. Asha Kamath, Associate Director of PSPH, followed by the traditional Lighting of the Lamp, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment. Dr. Cherian Varghese, Professor and Director of PSPH, introduced the event with a speech that emphasized the importance of sustaining an enabling environment and outlined the skills and competencies crucial for a successful public health career. He highlighted the diverse fields integral to public health, including social work, hospital administration, biostatistics, data science, digital epidemiology, and health technology assessment.
Shri D A Prasanna, Chief Patron of PSPH, MAHE, delivered an inspiring address, urging students to pay keen attention to their studies with dedication and commitment. He stressed the importance of acquiring skills in public health communication, counselling, and data analysis. Shri Prasanna encouraged students to develop a confident attitude, embrace diverse subjects, define problems accurately, cultivate a problem-solving mindset, and build meaningful relationships.
In his Presidential Address, Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M. D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, underscored the importance of problem-solving, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He emphasized the key verticals of excellence in education, exemplary research, internationalization, sustainability, and alumni engagement. Highlighting the integral role of research, He advocated for a proactive rather than reactive stance in addressing the enormity of public health problems. He remarked, “Excellence is achieved by consistently performing, and PSPH stands by this principle.” Additionally, he shared his perspective on the quantum of education, stating, “25% of education is derived through teachers, 25% from one’s own willingness, 25% from peers, and the rest as a lifelong learner.”
The event also featured alumni sharing their experiences, providing current students with valuable insights into the professional world of public health. Alumni speakers included Dr. Rohit Raj, Kshama Bangera, Gowreesh Acharya, and Dr. Ramya, who shared their experiences and journey, offering guidance and inspiration to the new students.
The Orientation Day 2024 was a resounding success, reflecting PSPH’s dedication to fostering a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment for its students. As the new batch of students begins their academic journey, the Prasanna School of Public Health reaffirms its commitment to excellence in education, research, and societal contribution. The orientation program was facilitated and managed by the students of PSPH, showcasing their leadership and coordination skills.
