Early Diagnosis and Treatment at American Oncology Institute Calicut Saves 40-Year-Old with Breast Cancer
Calicut, October, 2024: A 40-year-old woman from Calicut diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer has been successfully treated at American Oncology Institute (AOI), Calicut. Her case was promptly reviewed by the AOI Multidisciplinary International Tumor Board to discuss and devise the best treatment options.
Nisha (name changed), a state government employee with no significant medical history, discovered a breast lump during an AOI breast cancer screening camp in Calicut. She was further evaluated by Dr. Midhun Murali, MD, Radiation Oncology at AOI. After thorough evaluation and relevant investigations, Nisha was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer.
Elaborating on the procedure, Dr. Midhun Murali., MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI said, “Given the small size of the lesion and other favorable prognostic factors, we planned a breast conservation surgery. The surgery was performed within days of diagnosis, providing the patient peace of mind. An oncoplastic surgery was also done for the best cosmetic outcome. Genetic testing indicated she did not need chemotherapy, so she received external beam radiotherapy for four weeks. She continued to work during her treatment and is now disease-free at six months post-treatment, currently on hormonal tablets and regular follow-ups.”
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, with increasing incidence each year. Unfortunately, many breast cancers in India are detected at an advanced stage. Early detection through self-examination, clinical examination by a doctor, and screening mammograms can help change this scenario. Dr. Midhun urges women above 40 to undergo regular screening mammograms for early detection.
AOI is equipped with the latest technology, centralized radiation treatment planning, and international-standard cancer treatment protocols, ensuring a holistic and precise approach to patient care. The patient was extremely anxious at the time of her diagnosis but quickly accepted it with a positive attitude. Post-treatment, she is confident and often proudly shares her journey and triumph over cancer. Her story serves as an inspiration for others to fight cancer.
Mr Faisal Siddiqui, Group Head – Strategy and Operations, CTSI, South Asia, said, “At AOI, we discuss patient care in local and international tumor boards weekly to ensure the best treatment protocols are followed. Advances in diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities have made organ conservation possible in various cancers, including breast cancer. AOI is committed to offering superior clinical expertise, advanced technology, and compassionate care for our patients in South Asia.”
