“1 in 6 deaths globally is due to cancer. Around 20 million new cancer cases and 10 million cancer deaths occur each year worldwide. The most common cancers globally are: breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancers. Up to 50% of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes and early detection. India records about 14–15 lakh new cancer cases every year. Approximately 8–9 lakh deaths per year are due to cancer in India. By 2030, cancer cases in India are projected to increase by nearly 12–15%. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Indian women. Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in Indian men—strongly linked to tobacco and chewing gutka/pan masala. Over 70% of cancer cases in India are detected late, making treatment more difficult and outcomes poorer. When detected early, many cancers are highly treatable and survival rates increase significantly.

National Cancer Awareness Day reminds us that early detection can save lives. Let us encourage regular screening, healthy lifestyle choices, and support for those battling cancer. Awareness is the first step toward prevention and care. Together, we can make a difference. Early detection is not just a medical step, it is hope, courage, and a chance at life.”
