Rayagada, Sept 1 (UDN): Kabita Hikaka, a tribal student from Odisha's Rayagada district, has achieved her long-cherished dream of clearing the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). But for the aspiring doctor, the next challenge is not securing a medical seat—it's finding the money to pursue an MBBS degree.
Hailing from Sahada village in Bissamcuttack block, Kabita cracked NEET on her third attempt, a milestone that has brought pride to her family and community. However, her parents, who work as daily wage labourers, now face an uphill battle to finance her medical education.
A dream shaped by perseverance
Kabita, the only daughter of Laba Hikaka and Kamala Hikaka, grew up in a modest household where every rupee earned went towards supporting the family's needs and her education.
She began her schooling in her village before moving to Bhaleri Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya, where she scored 90 percent in Class 10. Her academic performance later earned her an opportunity to pursue higher studies at ICONIC in Bhubaneswar.
Despite falling short in her first two NEET attempts, she continued preparing and finally secured success in her third try.
Strong NEET performance
Kabita secured Odisha rank 4,178 and ST category rank 137 in the entrance examination, making her eligible for admission to a medical college.
While the result has opened the door to an MBBS course, the financial burden of admission and other educational expenses has become the family's biggest concern.
Family seeks support
With both parents relying on daily wage work for their livelihood, arranging the funds needed for medical education is proving difficult. The family is now hoping for financial assistance that will enable Kabita to continue her studies and realise her ambition of becoming a doctor.
Her journey—from a remote tribal village to clearing one of India's toughest entrance examinations after multiple attempts—has already emerged as a story of resilience and determination, inspiring many students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds across Odisha.
