New Delhi, August 17: India’s number of ultra-high-income taxpayers rose sharply in Assessment Year 2026, with 576 individuals reporting annual income of Rs 100 crore or more, marking a 39 per cent increase from 415 in the previous year, according to Income Tax Department data cited in an SBI Research report.
The broader high-income taxpayer base also continued to expand, with the number of taxpayers reporting Rs 1 crore or more rising to around 5.36 lakh in AY26, from 4.71 lakh in AY25.

The sharp rise at the very top of the income pyramid points to the growing scale of high-value economic activity being captured within India's formal tax system.
The increase can also be seen as a positive sign for formalisation and tax transparency, as more high-income earnings are being reported through official channels. A larger formal taxpayer base can strengthen the government's ability to assess economic activity and improve tax compliance.
The trend also reflects the expanding opportunities for entrepreneurs, business owners, investors and high-skilled professionals to generate substantial income across India's growing economy.
For the wider economy, the rise in high-income taxpayers can support investment and demand in areas such as financial services, technology, professional services and premium consumer markets. If a portion of this wealth is reinvested in businesses and new ventures, it can also contribute to innovation and employment generation.
At the same time, the data do not establish a specific reason for the sharp increase in the Rs 100 crore-plus category, and a rise in the number of such taxpayers does not automatically mean tax collections have increased by the same proportion.
Overall, the latest figures highlight a growing formal high-income segment in India, strengthening the link between entrepreneurship, wealth creation and the country's evolving tax system.
